How To Choose A Surfboard

May 02, 2024

1. Weight and technique: The heavier the weight, the larger the board. 60KG: 7.2-8.0 feet, 70KG: 7.8-8.6 feet, 80KG: 8.2-9.2 feet, 90KG: 8.6-10.0 feet. The better the technique, the smaller the board. Therefore, beginners should try to choose larger boards, such as those above 7.8 feet.
Unit conversion: 1 foot=30.48 centimeters, 1 inch=2.54 centimeters. For example, for an 8-foot-6 board, it is equal to 8 * 30.48+6 * 2.54=259.08 centimeters. In addition, inches to feet are in base 12, which means the difference between an 8-foot-6 board and a 9-foot board is 12-6=6 inches=15.24 centimeters
2. Wave condition: Use small boards for large waves and large boards for small waves.
3. Material: It is mainly divided into inflatable board and fiberglass steel plate. Inflatable board is mainly made of brushed base material as the core material, which is cheap, easy to carry, and has the same hardness as hard board after inflation. It is also reinforced by double edge pressure, which is not easy to break and will not leak air. The cost of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) will be higher. Currently, the mainstream is to use EPS foam as the inner core, with the FRP bottom wrapped in two layers and three layers, and coated with epoxy resin to make the board strong, tensile, and more wear-resistant and not easily broken.
4. Curved: Novice players must find a curved board. Curved running is faster, easier to perform movements, and more suitable for beginners.
5. Board head: The board head part affects the appearance, making it more stable when cycling with a rounder shape and lighter and more flexible when moving with a sharper shape.
6. Thickness of the board: The thicker the board, the better it can chase the waves, with high stability, slower speed, and slightly more difficult turning. The thinner the wave, the harder it will be to catch up with the waves. It is necessary to ride on a steeper wave wall to get off the wave, but the speed is faster and turning is easier.
