To maximize the effectiveness of a surfboard, regular maintenance and upkeep are essential. So how to maintain and clean a surfboard?
1. Surfboard cleaning
Rinse and wipe after each use, seawater can cause significant damage to the integrity of the surfboard, especially when it is subjected to some collisions and impacts. Salt can penetrate from the inside through the small wounds that have been punctured, causing damage. Rinse with fresh water after each surfing. This is easy to implement and won't take up too much time.
In addition to rinsing, deep cleaning is also required after several surfing sessions. Use different methods for maintenance based on where you surf and how often you stay in the water.
2. Surfboard maintenance
(1) Prepare to open the board
The first step is always the most challenging. The first step is to confirm that there are no old, sand containing, or dirty waxes on the board. It takes some time to clean up the old wax and place the surfboard in a sunny area. Sunlight helps soften wax. In this way, it is much easier to melt and harden the wax. If there is no sun, you can use a hair dryer. Whether it comes from sunlight or a hair dryer, be sure to keep the heat moderate and avoid overheating to avoid damaging the surfboard.
(2) Diagonal oblique cutting with wax comb
Before waxing, use the blade of a wax comb to scrape off the wax on the surfboard and clean it with a cloth. If you can't find the wax comb for a while, you can take a plastic card or replace it. When the surface is almost scraped, pour some warm water on the board. Soften the residue with warm water and wipe it off with a damp cloth.
(3) Use Surfboard Cleaning spray
After warm water cleaning, there will be some residues on the board. In order to clean more thoroughly, you can use the surfboard cleaning spray. Apply evenly on the surfboard, follow the usage time stated in the user manual, and finally wipe it clean.
(4) Apply coconut oil
The final step is to thoroughly wipe the entire surfboard. Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to protect the board body. After drying, apply a layer of fresh wax or finishing spray.
