How to clean a surfboard fin?

Aug 08, 2025

Hey there, fellow surfers! As a supplier of surf accessories, I've seen my fair share of surfboard fins in all sorts of conditions. Keeping your surfboard fins clean isn't just about making them look good; it's crucial for maintaining their performance in the water. In this blog, I'm gonna walk you through the steps on how to clean a surfboard fin properly.

First things first, let's talk about why cleaning your fins is so important. Over time, dirt, salt, and other debris can build up on your fins. This buildup can affect the hydrodynamics of the fin, reducing its efficiency and making your rides less smooth. It can also cause corrosion and damage to the fin material, shortening its lifespan. So, regular cleaning is a must if you want to get the most out of your fins.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start cleaning, you'll need to gather a few supplies. You'll need a bucket, warm water, a mild detergent, a soft-bristled brush, and a clean towel. The mild detergent should be gentle enough not to damage the fin material, while the soft-bristled brush will help you get into all the nooks and crannies without scratching the fin.

Step 2: Remove the Fin from the Surfboard

If your fin is removable, carefully take it out of the surfboard. Most modern surfboards use a fin system like FCS or Future, which makes it easy to remove and install fins. Just follow the instructions for your specific fin system to take the fin out safely. If your fin is fixed, you can still clean it on the board, but you'll need to be a bit more careful not to get water on the board itself.

Step 3: Rinse the Fin

Once you've removed the fin, give it a good rinse under running water. This will help remove any loose dirt and debris. Make sure to rinse both the front and back of the fin, as well as the edges. You can use a hose or a bucket of water for this step.

Step 4: Prepare the Cleaning Solution

Fill your bucket with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Mix the solution well until it's soapy. You don't need to use a lot of detergent; just enough to create a gentle cleaning solution.

Step 5: Scrub the Fin

Dip your soft-bristled brush into the cleaning solution and start scrubbing the fin. Pay special attention to any areas with stubborn dirt or grime. You can use a bit of extra pressure if needed, but be careful not to scratch the fin. Work your way around the entire fin, making sure to clean all the surfaces.

Step 6: Rinse Again

After you've scrubbed the fin, rinse it thoroughly under running water to remove all the soap and dirt. Make sure there's no soap residue left on the fin, as this can affect its performance in the water.

Step 7: Dry the Fin

Use a clean towel to dry the fin. Pat it dry gently to remove as much water as possible. You can also let the fin air dry for a few hours to make sure it's completely dry before reattaching it to the surfboard.

Step 8: Reattach the Fin (if removed)

Once the fin is dry, carefully reattach it to the surfboard. Make sure it's securely in place and tightened according to the instructions for your fin system.

Tips for Maintaining Your Surfboard Fins

  • Clean your fins after every surf session: This will prevent dirt and salt from building up on the fins.
  • Store your fins properly: When you're not using your fins, store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, as this can damage the fin material.
  • Inspect your fins regularly: Check your fins for any signs of damage or wear. If you notice any cracks or chips, it's best to replace the fin to ensure your safety in the water.
